Helmet for a member of the Asylum Fire Brigade

The West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum Fire Brigade was formed in 1871, commissioned by the then medical director James Crichton-Browne.

The brigade was originally made up of both staff and patients. Able bodied patients were supervised by experienced staff and would have their bedrooms located on the ground floor so that they could be quick to help in any emergency.

Providing patients with meaningful work was in keeping with the 19th century doctrine of Moral Treatment.
